  • Eheim 2217

I have a 2217 in my 50g tank. The water coming out the tube is very strong but I don't think the intake is working like it should because it seems my tank isn't as clear as it should be. Anyone have any ideas what's going on and how I can correct it? I just clean the Eheim several days ago and did 1/3 water change and it was VERY clean then.

Any and all info, suggestions appreciated.

The water coming out is strong or isn't very strong?

If it isn't strong do you have a pre filter on the intake. If you do it might be plugged up. If you dont make sure there is no air trapped in the intake line or at the top of the canister.

Oh forgot to mention. If you have the quick disconnects make sure they are seated and tight and that the ball valves are all the way open....

        what media are you using?
        Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Is it cloudy? Or does it look like its full of debris (microbubbles?) - If it looks like its a large amount of tiny bubbles - just beat the hell out of the canister

You know all those books printed 'for dummies', well I'm one of those so everything you've just said to me makes no sense. Could you bring it down a couple notches so I can try to understand what you're trying to tell me. It just seems the water pressure going out of the filter is far better than the water going into the filter. When I feed everyone, I've watched the food drop right in front of the intake pipe and keep going. You would think as strong as these filters are, that piece of food would have been snatched and sucked into the filter in a heartbeat.

What was in the box. I followed the directions perfectly.

Intakes on filters are not that strong .....at least not strong enough to suck certain pellets up . Poop weighs less than your normal sinking pellet ....that's why poop floats around in the water column . If the water coming out of your filter is nice and strong...then your filter is working as it should . Now if you want to have a clearer tank.....you may want to stuff some filter floss (quilt batting) into your Eheim 2217 . The filter floss works great as an extra fine mechanical filter media . The only down side to the filter floss is the fact that it clogs faster which means you'll have to open the canister and replace more often .

Thanks, Superdave. I thought about that when I was putting it all together but didn't have any floss at the time. And you're right.....I want to make the tank clearer so I'll pick up some tomorrow at work. Do I exchange anything already in the canister with the floss or just add it? On the top? In the middle?

Add it to the top . This way it will be the last media your water passes through before entering back into your tank . You should notice a huge difference in a matter of an hour or so . If you go by Wal-mart...you should be able to find the quilt batting in the Hobbies and Crafts section . It is usually around $4 to $5 .

How dense should the batting be? I work at Walmart in the Fabric & Craft departments so I know exactly where it is. We have various brands and some are more dense than the others.
