Ok I have two of them both are JBJs. When I hook them up to the co2 tank, they will not "engage". the light turns on so I know the power supply works and the co2 tank is completely full. I have been running planted tanks for 5 years now so i know how they work. Could it just be a faulty needle valve?

okay i looked the jbj and it looks very similar to milwaukee. is the light that you are refering to on the power supply which actuates the solenoid shutoff valve? if that comes on then yes the solenoid should be energized. those valve can get stuck if it is not occasionally actuated (so anyone with a SOV should occasionally unplug it and allow it to cycle a few times) so while it is energized take a small hammer and tap on the brass part that is on the lower side of the back box. that may free the valve stem / magnetic coil assembly. needle valves rarely get stuck unless you drive them in too far or unless it was used on saltwater and salts have encrusted the seat. most likely you would get a failed seal though and not blocked flow. do you see pressure on the high pressure indicator (the right one) when you open the valve on the CO2 cylinder? if so then you have pressure there. if you crank in the reg. a little then you should see some pressure on the low pressure indicator (the left one) and then we will know that works. if you know the reg. works but theres no flow after tappingthe coil on the SOV and opening up the needle valve then we need to decide if its the SOV or the needle valve. de-energize the SOV and bleed the regulator gas. the plug on the side of the SOV should pull out, there might be a screw holding it in. you may be able to rotate the plug out of the way while the SOV is de-energized so then you wont have to unplug it. once the plug is out of the way, unsrew the bubble counter / needle valve. reassemble and re-energize the SOV and put some gas on it again. if you feel co2 coming out then its the needle valve and those are typically a pain to rebuild. if no co2 then its the SOV and you might be able take the black actuator box off and try to figure out why the magnetic coil isnt pulling the valve stem. i'm on the NE side of town or else i would just pick it up and look at it for you.
