Never had problems with the penguins but I've lost more than a few neons before.

I'd have to agree with the "something else is doing it" opinion. In thinking of things that naturally change at night, it's pretty much the oxygen content in the water and predatory activities. I once had a killer angelfish that only murdered neons at night. I'd wake up to several dead fish each morning that were stuck on the filter intake. But when the corys start dying too, it makes me think there's an oxygenation issue. I'm not sure how Flourish/Excel kills fish... I would think that a chemical contaminant would kill fish at any time of day or night, but if you're adding the chemicals in the morning, maybe it's taking until night to kill them? Not sure how all that would play in.

Q, you're lucky that your microrasboras haven't been sucked in! Mine were doing fine too, first batch and second batch, until I looked and saw that one of the new batch had been sucked in and then gotten stuck in one of the holes in the spray bar of the sponge filter!! So weird!
And sorry about your penguins nightster. Those are some cool lookin fish.

Aren't neons some of the less hardy variants of tetras? RIP penguin tetras.

i even had one of two corydoras stuck to the filter intake... his mouth was the main part that was stuck... the aqueon 55 has some good suction!
I need to make a list of what types of tetras I have in the tank... i did have some buenos aires tetras (5) in there but took them out and put them in with my big fish in the 100 gal they are doing great in there, the oscar, green terror, jack dempsey dont even bother with them.

I killed 20 penguin tetras, and once I stopped dosing flourish everyday the last one survived. Lost 18 that night and 2 more had died when i got home from work. The last of the mohicans, as I like to call him, is now the dominant of the new group of 5. Lol

I would agree with the acclimating part and throw in the quality of the stock?

Ive used excel to the point of excess without any problems but the quality of the livestock and the will to live plays a big role, most of my tanks are overfiltered and would easily siphon up any weak fish but those that want to live or acclimate to the new tank stand up to it quite well. Right now I have a 2217 running my 30g and have yet to see any micro boraras get sucked up and they tend to be on the sensitive side and not great swimmers against the strong filtration.

i think i would look into their acclimation if the new ones are dying. of course you can put a sponge around your intake just to remove that as a variable but this will slow your filter flow rate down. maybe back off on the excel to every other day until you know whats going on since it does have aldehyde in it. im not sure how fish tolerate aldehyde but it does a number on snails, fungus, and algae.

It does have a few plants plus a micro bubble wand. i pour a cap of Flourish Excel each morning. I do have a heater on each end of the tank and the killer filter is right next to one. Sad, i bought four neons to go with the only one i had and the next morning all four were on the filter and my only one was just swimming around looking for his new buddies... :(

is the tank planted? O2 levels will drop at night if it is.
