  • Noisy refugium splashing

I'm having problem with the refugium making too much noise. The pump is making too much noise even when it's not next to anything and has the rubber feet on it, but the splashing that the return pipe in the refugium is really loud and bothersome in a living room. This refugium uses a LifeGard model 4000 pump, that does 1017 gph for a 90 gallon aquarium and a micro sock. The overflow box is inside the aquarium itself, currently I have the refugium filled as high as possible to diminish the splashing but all the bio balls floated out and the noise is the same.

Sorry forgot to say I do have a micro sock on it, the splashing sound could be heard through out the house so it's pretty loud. It's like opening the faucet of your bathtub, given the faucet is the old style ones that have like a big square outlet on it, and you turn it to the max.

hard for me to visualize your setup do you have any pics or a video?

I run my pipe under the water in my sump. is that a possibility for you?

You could always cover the inside of your stand with foam insulation sheets to dampen the noise.

          It's just the r200 refugium first generation : http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl...h=128&hovw=128

That's a pic of it just mine has a pump at the right side, the pvc pipe from one of the grey tubes is out about an inch from the bulk head and the outlet of that bulk head is about an inch and half from the water. The bulkheads were reversed on this system to modify it with mico socks so the threaded part is on the top instead of below and I can't push the pvc pipe any more down in it.

Unfortunately the camera I have doesn't work with my computer, but what were you trying to figure out from the pic or video? The noise is so loud though that I can hear it in my room with my door shut from the living room, so I don't think those sheets would do much when I go to the living room.

can you put a longer pipe in the sump so it goes 3-4" under water.

I don't know I'll guess I'll ask the guy that sold me the refugium, if I can do that.

Well I tried both the long tube and a valve to slow down the flow of water, but now where the tube connects to the aquarium, it's leaking.... I'm getting tired of hassling with this, the guy at the store said I couldn't return the refugium, I can see how he wouldn't accept the aquarium, since he drilled it but the refugium if I have everything and the receipt, I don't see why he couldn't. Is this common practice? He said it was because the refugium was used and people don't want it like that.

I honestly dont see why he wouldn't take the fuge back or do a sort of exchange thing for a different one or at least go and take a look at it. Idk I'm pretty much rambling at this point haha. Where did you exactly get this set up from? If its from where I think it is then you may as well forget about getting your money back haha

Also another thing you could try is sort of like a spray bar inlet instead of a straight jet stream. May help.

replace the pump with a small eheim and it'll not make any vibration noise and the lower flow rate of the pump would make less noise too.

As far as buying anything from AW, FYL. I was gonna suggest reselling it on here but I'm sure you got assraped on the price so you won't recoup no where near enough.

with these setups i've seem them run 2 longer pvc pipes so its under the water like what cichlid said.. and if its leaking where the hole is drilled you might have a bad gasket? idk... pictures are 10000x better
