I have two FX5 on the 180g and it sucks.... I've had smaller pumps polish water better and the options/media capacity is weak in comparison. The pump being on the bottom of the canister is greatly flawed when using on a sand substrate tank.

Clogs up fast and when it does you get micro-bubbles.

For the amount of circulation I guess the FX5 would beat the two eheims but long run... those two eheims will still be pushing flow though all media and filtering while the FX5 would be spitting bubbles all over forcing you to service them.

I recently dumped the whole media trays and coarse sponges on my fx5 in favor of all bioballs/pond matrix and have to say I like it like that. With the 2262 I could easily have 5gallons worth of ehfisubstrat pro and it would be a filtering beast, the FX5 I had to limit myself to bio-balls to keep from having them clog up and forcing me to service them. I don't like cleaning canisters so I set them up to best serve their purpose while allowing me to be lazy.

mmmm that sound true let see what other people say about it, eheim botton to top work better but what make the FX5 be so popular an work for many other setup's i never had experience with trays only with a cascade, i dont like to be cleaning canister every week rather 2+ weeks lazy 2 lol

I think what makes them popular is the price in comparison to a 2260.

But IME, it would take 2 to equal that of a 2260

Everyone said it all. Easier to maintain and clean out, and better flow. I have the 2260 on my 105 which I absolutely love for all the same reasons I like the 2217, especially the flow part. Oh and there's the giant volume of it too. :)

That said, I've never had an FX5. But I've had other Fluval canisters and I must say I like Eheim better in general for that.

Sunny has both, he'd be a good one to chime in right about... now!

                            Another thing...

I like the idea of splitting your beneficial bacteria amongst 2 filters instead of "keeping all your eggs in one basket", with 1 filter. This way you can alternate when you do filter cleanings and not have to worry about problems.
