  • Drilled tank

Ive heard of and seen drilled tanks but I don't understand what it means exactly and the pros and cons or how to even use a drilled tank. With a large tank purchase in my future, I'm sure I'll have some drilled tanks as an option. Can someone explain what it means to drill a tank and the benefits?

That's about it. People normally drill tanks to run a cleaner set up.

It's not only for wet/drys or sumps, a lot of people drill tanks to run with canisters. This way the intake and output hose doesn't have to go over the trim of the tank.

From what I understand, you drill the bottom of the tank for a canister, then closer to the top for a sump. I have a question related to this too. Are there diffusers that attach straight to bulkheads for the return? I'm looking to get my tank drilled for a refugium then another hole for the return if possible

So with a drilled tank and a wet dry system, the overflow boxes aren't needed but the actual sump and all of that is still beneath the tank?

Depends on the bulkhead you use, it can be threaded or slip in but either way you can make it so the strainer attaches straight to the bulkhead itself

IMO I like the idea of an overflow box because of the better surface skimming. There are boxes that attatch to the inside of your tank designed for euro braced type tanks. If you go the non overflow box route its the same princible. So yes just like a standard wet/dry setup, your sumps and canisters are still under your tank.

Bottom drill the tank and have a overflow box that cover the drilled holes.

Josiah, if you have time, come check out my 280. It's drilled in the bottom for canisters and back glass is drilled for overflows and returns.

How is that weird? They do that with RR tank it skims the surface like the HOB overflow and has a dorso type PVC tube to syphon to a filter system.

Oh right. Didn't realize you were talking about a standard corner overflow )
