  • Bulkhead leaking

    I recently acquired a drilled Oceanic 180g

I'm doing a closed loop with Eheim 2260/62s.

And I can't seem to get the 1'' bulkheads on the intake sides to stop leaking. It isn't a massive leak but it will form beads of water every 10 minutes or so. I have adapters screwed in for the Eheim hoses.

I got these bulkheads from City Pets.

It seems the inside dimensions might be a little off cause even with a generous amount of teflon tape the threaded adapter screws in flush with ease.

Is it leaking between the bulkhead and glass or internal?

Internal. It's sealed from the bulkhead, glass, gasket and nut.

I have a hose threaded adapter screwed in from the threads on the outside of the tank to the Eheim intake.

So it's leaking at the two threaded fittings of the adapter then?

You could find a flat rubber washer/grommet that sits inside the bulkhead and flat against the inside of the bulkhead and then seat the threaded barb adapter against it. If you can dry the tank out you could also use teflon paste to see that creates a better seal between the threads or just pile on more teflon tape. The two threaded ends could be slightly different which isn't uncommon since it's made by different people and some might not have as great quality control. Maybe try different barbed adapter fittings.

RTV or silicone will also work and could still be removed if needed.

Thanks, I think I'm going to just replace the bulkheads with the ones that came with the tank. I took out the threaded adapters and tried it on the old bulkheads and it seems to be a much tighter fit. ?????????

I'll apply your advice to the old bulkheads and just use the new gaskets.

Needs to be: bulkhead, gasket, glass and nut. You don't need to but silicon between the gasket and the glass is always a plus. Make sure that the glass is clean

It's not leaking from the bulkhead and tank mating. It's leaking from the male threaded adapter that is screwed in from the bottom. The Bulkhead's internal threads.

                use PVC cement.

I don't think PVC cement will work if the dimensions are off. I can hand tighten till it's flush with ease. The old bulkheads I can hand tight to 75% at the most.

yeah I would swap them out.. take your adapters with you and test fit till you find what you need.

It's just a pain in the *** to dig up all the sand and remove the heavy rocks and let it completely drain out.

Does plumbers putty work on the threads?

                        I wouldn't trust it.

you could just use silicone or some sort of two-part epoxy.

silicone and let dry. I always do this as a precaution

Changed out the bulkheads from City Pets to some old spare ones.
