  • Ammonia Toxicity and Ph/Temperature relationship

I have been reading this over through a variety of different sites and have found the information vastly useful, especially in understanding the relationship to Ph. As most nitrifying bacteria are reduced or absent in water that is 6.0 and under it helped in understanding what I needed to watch for and to assist in determining my water change schedule. It also made me aware of the toxicity of ammonia in higher Ph tanks (Tanganyikan, ect.) and has assisted in understanding what numbers I should watch for. Hope this might help some others here in whatever tank you have.

Bill Wimmer, who owned University Pets at hwy 3 and Bay Area Blvd for decades pointed that relationship out to me back in the 80s. He's one of the original local gurus.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

Bumped for some great info, especially anyone interested in the Nitrate cycle and how Ph/water hardness effects that process

I thought it was, especially when we started really focusing on very soft water low Ph tanks. I realized that the Nitrate cycle does not exist, so I started researching what to pay attention to. As it turns out Ammonia is the only issue and its really not very dangerous at all as long as its very acidic water. We managed to get well below a 6.0 (our test kit stops there) and likely down into the lower 5's. The Mosquito rasbora loved it and were neon red. Have considered doing a larger system using that as a model, but really need an RO/DI system for it to be feasible.
