  • Fluval 304 impeller upgrade?

I was looking up replacement intake tubing, and a thought came across as I saw that the impeller shaft for the 304 and 404 are the same. I've heard of people upgrading impellers in a Mag5 → Mag7, Eheim 2213 → 2215, 2215 → 2217, and probably a lot of other products.

Is it possible to upgrade the Fluval 304 impeller to a Fluval 404 or 405 impeller and gain increased flow? Or is this not possible?

Not, sure ! Good idea tho. Im sure just by replacing the hose from that ribbed stuff to a vinyl hose will give u better flow rates.

I've been trying to look around to see if anyone has done this. So far, no luck. I don't like the ribbed stuff, it looks ugly and doesn't do any good.

        Re: Fluval 304 impeller upgrade?

If everything is dimensionally the same between the two impellers besides minor differences, there's no reason it couldn't work.

I was thinking the same thing. I didn't look up the dimensions on the two though.

Looks like it won't be possible. Impeller dimensions on the 404 are 3.5" H x 0.13" W x 5" D. The dimensions on the 304 are 1.3" x 3.3" x 4.5". Found dimensions off Amazon and Ebay. Not sure if they're correct, but I had a feeling it wouldn't work.

Does fluval make spraybars? That might increase flow.

Or just make a DIY spraybar.

I was planning on making a spraybar but decided not to. I just added one of those directional outputs that I have on my wet/dry for the return. For the intake I made a diy PVC thing with a fx5 strainer on the end.

Why not just go for the quick and easy fix for flow ? Add a powerhead .

Just wanted to see if there was a way to make the filter put out more flow. I'm not gonna mess with the filter anymore than I already have. I have two weak powerheads (Knano 450gph/ea) right now, but I plan to upgrade to a pair of K4 which will be a perfect amount of flow.
