if you need 300W of heat and instead use two 150w heaters then if one fails the other will shut off and the failed one will not have sufficient energy to overheat the tank...or at least not quickly

Having two heaters also gives you redundancy in case one fails to come on. Although they usually fail in the ON position, I do have an old glass one that did fail in the off position. So I have two titanium ones for my 120 when I get it up and running. We keep the house cold in the winter, around 70 or so.

          Re: Bad Heater

Then there's those Houston days where temp hits over 100 or drops below 60

Token, That makes since. I don't use 2 becuase I check on the stuff every day and my heaters are big enough I only need one.

As for the timp. of the home being enough.
Well I keep my fish room at 75 degrees. My SA. fish are happy at 78 - 82 degrees.. In the summer I try to keep the tanks as close to the 78 mark. So the house A/C doesn't work to hard. I the winter my tank help keep the house worm. I rase the timp. to 80 degrees. On a cold day you can feel the heat coming off the glass and the house heat doesn't have to work as hard.

All of this can be done in may difrent way. this is just how I my self do it...

As for tank heaters there are alot of good brand names out there. I just think it was amazing the one the went bad lasted for that long...

i'm with troy on this one, but i'm notorious for sticking to low-tech (read: inexpensive) methods. only have 3 heaters in the whole house, in the 125, 75. and the 10. i just check everything twice a day and no problems yet...
              my fish house:
              2.5g- ramshorn hatchery
6g eclipse- yellow shrimp, chili rasboras, yellow apple snails

45g- jade sleeper gobies, native killifish, feeder endlers

              75g-

              125g- fahaka puffer, rainbow shark
              and about a dozen bettas....
