These are meant for that purpose as well as other large water supply situations.

Bought one from Chris last week for the fishies but the wifie like the water better than the fishies so I'm getting another just for her. Fishies don't like to share

How long do carbon bottles last?

I had African cichlids and they did fine with the water softener coming out the tap. I did however run into problems when I started keeping WC Tropheus. I had to get a carbon bottle and splice before softener before things got better

How can you tell that the carbon has gone bad? Of course, if it really lasts 5-10 years, just replacing the carbon periodically would probably be a reasonable cost.

The quality of the water will go back to how it was before running through the carbon. Smell and everything comes back when the carbon has gone bad

Depends on the size of the carbon bottle

Not sure how much carbon is actually in a 1cu.ft. carbon bottle, but 1cu.ft. of activated carbon is about $70-100 give or take. Really depends on the source. Some people will sell it at a higher price. Catalytic carbon will cost much more.

The thing is I don't think they fill it completely with carbon. They have other filtering media in the tank from what I've heard. Looking at the tank I have I don't think you can DIY the media. I might be wrong though..

Yeah had a feeling it wasn't full of carbon. It would have been much heavier if it were

Does anyone know enough to guess at how long one or two of the 20" long by 4.5" "big blue) filters would last? On the plus, easily replaceable inserts, but on the downside, significantly smaller.
