  • Heater hoses for a camiseta filter

A friend of mine asked me if heater hoses are fish safe, he has a canister filter but no hoses, except for some leftover heater hoses from a past project, I don't know if it safe with fish, any help would be useful

Vinyl tubes at HD. Saves your friend the trouble with possible problems with the heater hose.

I think I paid $12 for a 10' roll of 5/8" ID and some HD you can cut the length you want from those rolls they have.

Eklikewhoa it's the kind of rubber hose you would use for house heaters or car radiators, I thought it would work but I have my doubts about it

Could have contaminants in it. I would just get a new one, so you won't have to worry about possibly harming livestock, etc.

Well he didn't wait he hook up the hoses on his canister and he says his mollies are acting weird and are goin belly up is that normal for canisters to do that I have 2 on my 90g bug there vinyl hoses, could it be his canister or the hoses or the sudden change in filter he took his hob filter off and ran the canister, the hoses are new since I bought them for him... I owed him a favor

Could be the canister. Was the media in it from a cycled tank, new, or sitting dry?

Sitting dry, he has it in three layers he used gravel he had used in the same tank before he switched to a different color, filter media, and two bags of carbon in it, he says the gravel is used to grow beneficial bacteria but idk if he is right

All gravel, sand, etc. will host bacteria. If he changed it out to a new one, then that could be the problem added with the canister. Sounds like the tank is recycling. Removing the substrate or the filter can cause this because you're removing the bacteria that was taking out the ammonia, changing it to nitrites, and releasing nitrates.

Is there anyway to speed up the recycling? or should he just remove the gravel from the canister

Majority of the bacteria is in the substrate though. The rest is in the filter and there's very little in the water (compared to the other two). I would also advise to remove the carbon. It doesn't do much of anything, does more harm than good(if you let it sit for too long), and lasts for a short time while submerged in water. If he wants a polisher, step up to purigen. It makes the water clearer and you can recharge it after you think it's time instead of tossing it, unlike carbon.
