  • Hagen Elite Dual Sponge Filter-A902--Question

    Hey everyone,

I recently put one of these filters in my 20g planted community tank. Does anyone know what size tank the dual filter is rated for, I can't find this info anywhere? Or does the rating size depend on the air pump rating? I am using a Whisper rated up to 40g. I went for the dual figuring I'd be on the safe side of clean for my tank. This is my first "sponge filter" and so far I really like it!!! :)

It's rated for about 20gal. I can't seem to post the link, but I found some details about it. Having a stronger pump will help out, but the bigger the cut outs (the holes that sit inside the sponge) are, the more suction it'll create. I DIYed some sponge filters and I'd rate them at about 60gal+ each? Not quite sure, but it's definitely gonna over-filtrate a 40B which I plan to use them for.

The sponge filter will do a great job. and the dual is rated at 20g. I would still use 2. I run just one sponge in my shrimp tank but its only 10g. works for me...

Thanks so much Mistahoo!!! Don't know where you found that rating but it's GREAT to finally have an answer to my question!! So funny that you found my other post, lol! Never would have thought it was the size of the holes that mattered. I also got a corner filter for the 20g as well, it has a tray for bio media in it and that one is rated for a 20g as well but I just have a Whisper 10 on it.

I like that this filter has suction cups for the side and doesn't just sit on the tank floor. Between these two filters for my 20g This tank should have crystal clear water all the time now!

The holes plus the air pump. Sponge is only there to trap debris and build BB (mechanical and biological). I cut out about 6" lines on the PVC of my sponge filter. That paired with a pump rated for 30g. It's doing a good job on the 10g but it could do more if I put a stronger pump. I will make a diy thread soon.

My sponge is a breeder sponge but I hav seen the Elite. they work great and an easy DIY.

Note: As it is good to have great filters. Still they are just part of the care it takes to keep a tank healthy. You still have to keep up with regular water changes.
