  • Determining Overflow Rating

So I have a dilemma. I made an impulse buy and bought a pcx40 external pump. I currently have a mag 9.5 on there but I feel it is too weak. Attached is a picture of the homemade U Tubes. They are dual 1". I'm hoping they can handle at least 1150 gph. What do you guys think?

Here's GPH ratings for DIY Overflows. Not sure if they're the same ratings for DIY U-tubes.

Those look familiar, I always go a few hundred gph lower than rated for when determining.

I don't like over powering or even running them at the rated gph, I think they work more efficient at a lower gph.

This. Underpowered is the safe way to go. Maybe get something rated for 1400-1500?

So U don't think the pump I bought would work?

                How many gph is it?

The pump is 1190 at zero head but with it being a few few below I would assume it would push around 900 or so?

                    it would be noisy.

And flood the chambers, almost negating the benefits of the oveflow.

I would think that the overflow won't be able to keep up.

Would it be safe to say I need to stick what I have? Would it be feasible to just add another small overflow to help?

Keep in mind you can have all the u tubes you want. If the drain in the actually overflow box can't handle the amount of water it won't work anyways.

I always thought that if the water is being pumped into the sump at the same rate that the return pump is pushing then it should be ok?

The oveflow will only "overflow" what the pump pushes up.
If that overflow can't keep up then you have water on the floor.
                              That's the only way.

You can have as many overflows as you want but if it isn't close to the gph drain amount then you would get bubbles/air pockets forming in the utubes and then loss of drain.
                              Then water on the floor.
