Help with external maintenance

I have setup an 'all pond solutions' external filter and its running flawless, however when I was throwing the rubbish away I noticed another part of the filter,

I know where it goes but I do not know how to open the filter without flooding the house?

Take the hose and everything with the canister outside?

Surely there should be a shut off allready on it? The tanks upstairs so don't really want to be carrying it up and down the stairs lol
