Bio Bead alternatives?

The Ceramic Beads on LFS and on Amazon are ~$11 for 500grams... not a large quantity. Is there a substitute I can use that doesn't cost $10 for a handful?

Nylon pot scrubbers work well too. Very cheap at the dollar store.

I've heard of those being used... but I don't think they are as surface-area dense as the beads... What about Lava Rock? Small ones? There is a garden center close to me that has that kind of stuff pretty cheap.

Petsmart price matche as internet price. Go to pet mountain and print out the fluval ceramics its like 6$ and biomax is 8$
