  • Sand how to

I am going to place sand on the new tank but i was told that i should used something on the bottom to protect the glass.

the question is what do you guys used to protect it, and if you actually place something between the glass and sand.

    thanks.

thats what i said but he was told by a person that shall remain unnamed to place a plastic cover between, one of those covers used for he fluorescent light bulbs. but his preticolas move the sand and then you can see the cover.

oh egg crate. That is normally used to keep rocks from hitting the glass. I don't use it personally all my fish are diggers.

Hi, R_sustaita. It is depend what kind sand are you use. I have 120G tank with fine sand it work great without any protect bottom glass, but on another 150G tank I use CaribSea Aragonite Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand and I use grave filter to protect the bottom glass also it benefit oxygen for your fish.

I guess it depends on if your fish are diggers or not. Me I just put the sand in.

              Is your bottom glass tempered?

                  R. I use a filter pad under large rocks but I use flat sand stone to take up some space. so the sand looks deeper but I do put the sand on the glass

so there seems to be no right or wrong way... so the next question is, how do you clean it? do you place it in the tank straight prom the bag or you rinse it 1st?

If there are no fish in the tank I just dump the sand in. fill then drain and repeat till the water is fairly clear. Then let the filter do the rest.

I dont rinse the sand. I fill upthe tank with sand than put a dinner plate in and have the hose pour onto the plate so it does not stir up the sand

tank is empty, no water nor fish. but i am buying the sand today and the fish tomorrow. i will use the seeded caninster filter from my 29 and 80% of the water from the 29 so it should skip the cycle. i will place the 1st in the 29 while in case there happens to be a cycle in the 75, i dont want any fish diying.
