  • Carbon filter back wash

So I turned on my carbon filter today and notice a weird smell. It smelt like something died in it!!! So I decided maybe I need to back wash the tank. Well the video will explain the rest.

So whoever said you don't need to back wash the filters maybe this will get you to think twice.

That's because there's filter batting between each section of carbon. It catches the debris while carbon filters the chemicals. I'd imagine after a while a bacteria colony will start to grow inside if you don't back wash it. A new bacteria colony growing while being exposed to air and then water every once in a while is what usually gives off that foul smell.

Try leaving a dirty bowl in a bucket and pour water every few days. You'll end up with the same smell you're probably smelling from your filter

      Gross!!

I was thinking of video-ing my 2260 when I opened it for the first time in 8 months after the carnage in my tank... but yeah. That was too gross to even consider posting. And I see some really nasty things in the ER at work. So yeah. Gross.

I don't believe that's fish water. It looks like stuff the carbon bottle pulled out of the water that came from your water treatment plant. Kinda has a rusty color too me. I usually back flush mine every 2-3 weeks...

+1 all that pollution was from the water source. Unless you let water from the tank siphon into the carbon bottle?

Not possibly. It is. How often you are supposed to back wash your carbon bottle depends on how often you use it.
