Carbon filter back wash

That's because there's filter batting between each section of carbon. It catches the debris while carbon filters the chemicals. I'd imagine after a while a bacteria colony will start to grow inside if you don't back wash it. A new bacteria colony growing while being exposed to air and then water every once in a while is what usually gives off that foul smell.
Try leaving a dirty bowl in a bucket and pour water every few days. You'll end up with the same smell you're probably smelling from your filter

Gross!!
I was thinking of video-ing my 2260 when I opened it for the first time in 8 months after the carnage in my tank... but yeah. That was too gross to even consider posting. And I see some really nasty things in the ER at work. So yeah. Gross. All bleeding stops eventually...

I don't believe that's fish water. It looks like stuff the carbon bottle pulled out of the water that came from your water treatment plant. Kinda has a rusty color too me. I usually back flush mine every 2-3 weeks...20g mixed reef
