If you just have to lower the PH RO-ID is the best way to do it... you will still have to do water changes and the water out of my tap is 8.2 but falls to about 7.8 in the tank. So you wont be able to do big water changes. If you lowerit passed 7.0. If you do a big 50% or more water change it will swing the PH and kill the fish. Smaller more often water changes are a pain in the ? . IMO: You just don't need to do all that. I have seen a few dark water tanks end badly.
What Fish are you planning to keep?

Yeah I was planning on doing small water changes several times a week anyways. I don't live far from Katy, so I'm guessing the pH is pretty high in my area too. I'm making a list of Amazon are type fish over the next few days. All the plants will be part of the region. Angels for sure because they are the whole reason for the tank. :) One of my old tanks was a community angel tank and I miss watching them.

Ok, sorry this took so long, but I've been crazy busy. I tested the tap water and the pH is 8.2. I'm definitely going to look into ways to lower it a bit and ways that will keep the tank stable. Alder cones and CO2 seem to obe my best bet. Thanks everyone!!!

Careful when lowering pH. Anything toxic from our water becomes more toxic at a lower pH. I experienced this for myself when I did water changes on two of my tanks at the same time. The soft water South Americans tank with peat moss and indian almond leaves suffered and I lost a lot of expensive fish. The shellies tank with aragonite and a pH of 8.6 did just fine.

Of course if you're aging water or using a carbon bottle, then none of this matters all that much.
