i'm a big fan of emperor hang on the back filters as well as aquaclear...i like the bio wheels in the emperor's....and you can print out a copy off the internet for petsmart and get the 280 and the 400 alot cheaper than you have to pay in store...just show them the print out and they'll match the price..i have quite a few of them and they are fabulous.....
Petsmart online price is $43 brand new. Print that page and take it with you. Speak to the manager if you have to. I bought one about a year ago this way, didnt have any problems at all.
Caniters - Jebo 828/838 or Oddysea CFS4 (same thing) I think are good filters one would work well for your 30 and one for your 55. Mike has them in stock right now so you could get them up and running asap. PlanB is correct they are budget filters, but because Mike's is somewhat close by anything goes wrong with them he is around to assist getting them fixed. I am about to put two of them on my 75g once its ready to go into the space I made for it.
For top of the line (expensive) go Eheim or Fluval (Hagen)
Hang on back - Aquaclear by Hagen all the way. I am not going to say it more... they are prolly the best hang on back filter you will find. I love the fact that they come with Carbon, bio filtration and sponge in separate containers with the filter.
In water filtration - Fluval Plus series.. Many people will tell you here... nothing beats a sponge filter... Fluval plus filters are exactly that.. a sponge filter which is just housed in a nice housing and allows for less dirt to escape the system when you want to remove the build up in the tanks. They have a pump at the top which forces water over the sponges in a well designed way. They come in 4 different sizes but I will only recommend the Fluval Plus 2,3 or 4.... number is the canister (sponge) size and max water flow. For a 10g a Fluval plus 2 is all you will need. I run a Fluval 2 on my 20g and a Fluval 3 on my 29g. I think they are simply fantastic filters.
Hopefully this is more than enough.. please continue with the questions... as you can see all of us who needs our head examined are happy to answer everyone needs. :P :P

It's been over 30 years since I had more than one aquarium and things have really changed since then. I just don't want to be ignorant and buy the wrong things. Everyone here has been soooooo great to share opinions and advice which I'm trying to absorb as quickly as possible.
The 55 I'm picking up tomorrow in Katy apparently has a leak. I don't mind razoring off the old and putting on new; been there and done that. So that tank is a ways off being up and running. Picking up my 30L on Monday so if I can find the right filter for it this weekend, it could be breaking itself in before next week. I'm also getting 2, 10s for the top shelf which means I'm going to have to transfer what I have in my 14 to one of the 10s. Already have a new filter for one of the 10s and I'll use the filter on the 14 for the other 10. Then.....phew.....need to find a new home for the 14. Anyone following all this? 8O
I really like the idea of having a spare container for aged water. Anyone else have little handy 'tips' like that you'd like to share?
Erythromycin - great antibiotic.
Melafix - Bacterial infections.
Pimafix - Bacterial and Fungal infections
Stresscoat - Removes chlorine and chlorimides from the water at water changes, and also helps replace slime coat if you have to handle your fish for any reason.
Aquarium salt - Helps repair damaged fins, helps with gill function, reduces the uptake of nitrites temporarily so your fish don't get the poisonous affects of that.
Seachem Prime - We use this if we have a spike in any of our tanks. Good for emergency detoxification of ammonia and nitrites.
We probably have more meds for the fish that we do for ourselves, but I just happened to get a lot of them in a package deal with an individual when I bought a tank and fish from them. We've got so much more than what I just listed, but rarely find ourselves needing much more than that. Aquarium salt and Stress Coat are our staples.
I haven't always kept Erythromycin on hand, but after an entire tank of fish started getting these weird white fuzzy things on them, and I had tried melafix, and salt, Charles at FRII recommended Erythromycin. We really thought we were going to lose all these fish, but after dosing with Erythromycin for a couple of days, all signs of illness were completely gone. Now I won't go without it in our little fish medicine case.
For the record, we don't have mistreated, sick fish...:), but we do somehow end up with other peoples sick, beat-up fish from time to time. :)
