I still have some meta-frame aquariums in service from 30 years ago.   I also have some reflectors w/ lights, hob heaters, diatom power filters air valves and air pumps that are just as old and still as seriviceable.  But I have upgraded all my box filters and ug filters to HOB power filters or canister filters because they are so easy to maintain and do a great job cleaning the tank.

Take the time to understand the nitrogen cycle as tha is new "common" knowdledge.  Also search the web for SALT as back in the day progressive salt treatments were the cure for anything and now we understand much better what it can or cannot do.
