Is their such a thing as to much filtration?

How many time should a tank be circulated in an hour?

Not really such a thing as too much. Generally a good rule is 10x over in an hour. If ur a lil under no biggie so lonv as u keep up with the water changes and ur basic filter maintenance you'll be fine.

I would say there's never to much filtration but I would atleast do a 10x turnover per tank sz

I know I'm not over filtering my tank. Too much flow can occur and keep the males from fertilizing to max potential.

Increased filtration often caused increased flow. Some fish like low flow.

I agree- in basic terms there's no such thing as too much filtration, but since filtration invariably goes along with flow...in certain cases there IS a such a thing as too much flow. Know your species, origin, and their preferences.

And some fish have to have that high flow to temper aggression.

If you're running canisters or wet/dry filters, you can easily increase your filtration potential, while keeping low flow. Sometimes it's not all about 10x the gph of flow. Just having the increase of media will benefit your filtration system

I have low flow but high filtration. By using all space for media. My tanks run 7+ but with max. media. I have no prob.

Tank is a 36gal bow front

Currently running a wet dry system, with two HOBs.

One HOB is rated for 300gph
                      One HOB came with tank

                      Wet/dry is a 4 drawer tower
Top drawer has coarse foam/filter floss
                      Second drawer filter floss
Third drawer around 30 pot scrubbers/some ceramic media
Fourth drawer same as third drawer
All sit in a 15gal tote
Pump is has small uv filter, and pushing around 565gph

I have the in flow pointing toward the front, and it seems to make a decent current. Would this set up be any different than a power head?

Only use for powerheads is to increase flow in the tank. For a 36gal, that wet/dry alone is plenty enough filtration. Your livestock will determine how much flow you need.

They seem to actually enjoy the flow.

The HOBs are only in place, because the wet dry is less than a couple weeks old.
