Sounds like your tank may be going through a cycle . Or it could be just a bacteria bloom . Where did you get that wood ? Did it smell like it was rotting ? If so, that sounds kinda "fishy".

Sounds like a bacteria bloom or the cycle is restarting

Wood has been in there for awhile. I think its a bacteria bloom. The white stufg is coating all over the tank walls an is built up pn the water intake on the filter. I was able to move my fish out into the 55 gal. It was just sooner than I wanted. I did a 80 percent change on the tank an the water is still bad. Should I just take it down an give everything a full cleaning, gravel as well?

No more water changes won't help if its a cycle. Big water changes won't help either. I suggest doing 10% water changes every hour for a few hours.

to me sounds like a poor filter maintenance issue, how long has the tank been set up?

What exactly do you do when you change or the filter every two weeks?

                        Large water changes will help.

Pickup some seachem stability, might work as a quick fix.

Yeah large water changes help dilute the ammonia but slows down the colonization of beneficial bacteria which is a bit more important if no fish are being lost.

I ended up taking down the tank. Dd heavy duty clean on inside and walls. Washed out sand substrate and cleaned filter. Will start the tank over an do a fish less cycle on it.
