How to treat a crashed filter?

I bought this used Eheim 2217, and the guy told me his tank crashed because he forgot to add dechlorinator.
I don't know how long did he wait before cleaning up. What do I need to do as a precaution? I'm thinking just take all the media out and wash them thoroughly with really hot water. That should nuke all the bad thing out and start over again. Any thoughts?

Are you going to add this to an existing running tank or a new one with no fish? To add to running tank a simple rinse will be fine. Leave your existing filters running and they will absorb bacteria from your other filter. If adding to a new tank you will need to add bacteria to get it going. Lot of brands at your local fish store.

I cleaned out one of my Eheim and dump all that good stuff in the new tank with the new Eheim. That should take care of the bacteria right?

It should but I would let it cycle first just to be on the safe side.
