this is how i use to set up my fx5 bio media in the middle and poly fil (cotton) on the sides and alittle poly fil on the top tray with bio media underneath and whenever i notice water flow getting weak i would just throw away the dirty poly fil and replace with new and it worked fine but i wanted to try something new

heard so much good things about pond matrix so i bought 20L bucket on amazon for $100
and had pot scrubbies and some bio balls sitting around so i decided to do all bio
heard some people had great results running all bio in canisters so lets see how this goes

In mine I've got the sponge on the sides and bioballs in the center part of the tray

I have the sponges on the side and all bio media in the middle (eheim pellets and the octagon shapped bio stuff). Works great on my 125 SA/CA Tank. The only readings I have are nitrates and thats expected.

When I had an fx5 I put bio media only. Noodles, coco puffs and plastic pot scrubbers. Don't have to open it as much when you don't have mechanical in there. Apparently, there is a wayyy cheaper source for pumice rock which is what matrix is. I can do some digging if anyone is interested.

I have a hundred gallon that runs on FX 5 the way that I have that setup is regular sponges on the outside the bottom tray has all matrix the middle Trey has carbon and purigen. the top Trey has fine sponges and Micron polishing pads.

I also have a 215 gallon tank that runs to FX5s the way that those are set up as one does all mechanical and chemical and the other one does full bio 3 trays of matrix with the sponges on the outside
