  • New 120gal.

Setting up a new to me 120 gal. I have two types of filtration that i'm going with.

    First being a 20 gal. wet/dry.

Second is a large canister filter.

The wet/dry is full of bio balls, filter pad and a foam block.

The question is: What would you load the canister filter with? As far as canister size goes, i'm referring to a eheim 2262 or FX6 size canister.

The goal is to have perfect water clarity and a healthy tank. I'm leaning towards 10 Frontosa Fry as far as stock goes. Not a heavy bio load to start.

Any thoughts or suggestion's would be helpful. Thanks.

I always used the ceramic rings and the round coco puff looking media. I also kept a piece of blue filter padding between each layer.

As far perfect water clarity that will depend on how much you filter the tank. And how clean you keep your equipment and tank. You can have all the filtration in the world and still have a dirty tank. However, the setup I mention earlier for my 2260's always helped keep clear water. That and making sure all food and waste is removed from decor and substrate.

Also if your looking at frontosa. MikeB is the man to talk to. If you search some of my older threads you can find the pictures of mine that I got from him. They were gorgeous. Man has more frontosa than most people combined.

Use your sump for biological filtration, and throw on a micron sock for the hell of it. Then you can use your canister for almost strictly mechanical. If you choose to go with bio media, K1, seachem matrix, and eheim substrat pro are all good options. Make sure you have some purigen in that beast too

Plus one on purigen. I completely forgot about that stuff.

Thanks fellas. Just watched a Youtube video on the Purigen because I was not familiar with it. The guy said to wash the Purigen once a month in a mild bleach formula and it's good as new again. He said you can do this 7 or 8 times before needing to renew it.

Again, I know nothing about this product. Is this sound advice?

Absolutely true. You can gauge when to clean it based off the change in color. It will become brown as it's used up

So, if i'm understanding this right. I can just put it in a bag and place it in the top of my canister filter?

One bag is enough for a 120gal. tank or does it matter?

Exactly, I use mine in the top of my FX6. I use two bags at a time on my 125 and have two waiting to swap out when it's time to recharge

You can buy it in larger quantities and save me money instead of buying four of "the bag"s

So, two bags of purigen, filter pads, activated carbon. Then im good to go.

I would remove the carbon, it essentially serves the same purpose as purigen, but purigen does a better job, in most's opinion

So load up on more mechanical filtration and purigen?
