  • Purigen Placement

Okay so I have 2L of purigen coming in today. As I have fish coming in Friday, I probably won't put still stuff to work immediately (due to QT treatments), but I did want to get some opinions as to where others use/keep there's. Possible option for my setup are:

    1 -2260
    1- wetdry
    1- eheim 2217

I was simply thinking of putting it in the 2217 along with the bag of activated carbon I have. My reasoning for having both in the 2217, is that it is easier to remove it from the system than if it is in either of the other locations. Advice and recommendations are appreciated as well as photo's if you have any. :emt_thumbs:

Wow congrats!!! 2L is a lot of Purigen for 135 gallon tank. I think wet/dry is best place to put it to maximize the contacting time. Also easy to remove for cleaning.

I agree with Ptran on placement. Most flow and easy access for regenerating. If you're using purigen you really don't need the carbon for much beyond removing meds

I would rather use the purigen in the wetdry actually because I would have a spare 2217 then.

However I still have to beg the question of why not use it in the 2217? There is better contact through the canister by my thought process as the purigen in the wetdry would have to cover the width of the the wetdry for optimal contact in the wetdry, whereas the canister allows for a more densely packed contact space.

Using it in conjunction with the activated carbon also would allow for removal of chloramines and chlorine, tannins (which color the water) and phenols (which cause odors). I'm not saying that the activated carbon is a must but it does have it's uses. I plan to use it until I purchase a carbon bottle in the coming weeks as well as a water storage tank(55 gallon) for water changes.

Im still running with the idea of the 2217 being run through nothing but the wetdry as well.

Ah, I gotcha. Well once you get your carbon filter setup, will you still be using the carbon? It just seems silly to me to run a 2217 strictly for purigen/carbon (once you have the carbon bottle). If you're using 2L you should be able to spread it out across the bottom of the wet dry, right? Similar to what you see with foam blocks between the trickle and the pump

That will have to be decided once it actually is purchased and at home. I am not sure if I can spread it out like the foam blocks. Wet dry is 13' wide. And I actually don't even have the foam block in it. Honestly I will have to really look at the wet dry this evening. It may be possible, If nothing else I might have to supplement foam blocks on the ends to ensure a tighter fit for coverage over the purigen.

Now we're cooking with peanut oil, I like the way you think. Sh*t, a 2217 would be one hell of a water polisher though..

This is the wetdry, nothing to scale. It might work in the spot I have pointed out.

2 liters is a lot of purigen.. I think with multiple bags you could make it work

Yeah I haven't fully decided that either. I had planned on only using one bag.

They sell big media bags. Big enough for 2260's. Keep in mind that a 2217 actually has a capacity of 6.0L. It's a lot but it's not an insane amount either.

I read review on Purigen, 100ml is good for 100 gallon tank up to 6 months.
2L would last you for 10 years? lol
