  • DIY Overflow

I just built this pvc overflow. I thought I would share this in case somebody else wants to build one. You can find details on youtube. This overflow works great and is quiet if you restrict the flow with a valve like I am using. I have been running it for 2 days and have had no problem with it. I used 3/4 pvc and I don't know how much water it can move but it moves more than needed for the 1400 liter pump I am using now. And you can of course use larger pipe if you need to move more water. This is a good workable cheap alternative. Materials are probably under 10.00.

How do you prevent fishes get sucked in?

The fish in that tank are all large enough so no problem there. But you can always build a weir. I am going to work on that next. Once I figure it out and build it I will post it.

You are right. I just didn't feel like spending 50.00 or more for an overflow for this tank. So this is a great solution.

Yeah an overflow box brand new would cost you $80.

I got the 100 gallon tank for free, I cleaned it and resealed it and painted the back of it blue. Then I used a wet dry I already had and a canister filter I already had. So I have about 20.00 in this tank and a few hours of resealing and fabricating. I don't think I will buy anymore overflows. Just make more of these when I need one. I have another 100 gallon tank that needs a glass replaced. I am going to replace the glass and drill that tank and build a sump. I haven't drilled tanks before or built a sump so this will be a fun experiment. You Tube makes everything possible!

Looks nice Ken. I have one just like it. It will flow about 300gh. but it will get air bubbles and stop flowing. that can be fixed with a little giant lift pump. about $20.00. but I just keep an eye on it.
As for how to keep fish out of it. They only do it ones.

Ken B, Thank You for share . To avoid fish get suck in that I would use the close cap with many cross cut an that would take care the problem.
