A friend of mine was given a 125 gallon which she really wasn't ready for equipment wise, but since it was in monumentally better shape than the 75g she had we went ahead and set it up when she moved into her brand new home a few weeks ago. She took the aquaclear 110 that she had on her 75 and out it on the 125 and hoped it would work until she would be able to upgrade in a few months. Shortly after setting it up the aquaclear developed a drip leak that caused some damage to the wall behind the tank as well as the moisture attracted ants. we are going to fishland to get her a new filter but she really needs the best bang for her buck because her fish are getting to be a pretty good size too (cichlids, catfish). She was going to get an eheim 2217 but with the repairs and exterminator costs money is a factor unfortunately. I was thinking maybe a large sponge filter driven by a mag 9.5 might be a good cost saving alternative, and since it would be contained in the tank she wouldn't have to worry about any more damage from drips or leaks. has anyone ever tried this? what could be some other options? she is prepared to buy the 2217 if she has to but anything that could maybe save her a few bucks or even give her better filtration for the same money would be awesome to hear about. Thanks guys.

We can talk all day about possibility. My 2 cents:
1. Eheim 2262 and an AC110. 2262 used around $220. AC110 used around $40.
2. Wet dry filter rated for 200-300 gallon. Used around $150.
3. 2x FX5. Used around $150 each.
4. 2x AC110. Used around $40 each.
