The Datnoids.  Everything we've read says that they like/need pH at 7.0 to 7.5.

              Re: Peat Moss question

We don't live in Houston.  We live in SugarLand and if I go test any of the 8 tanks we have running right now, they would have a pH reading of anywhere between 8.0 and 8.4.  We do weekly or bi-weekly water changes (depending on the tank).  I'm just looking for some way to make sure the pH in one tank is somewhere close to neutral for the Dats.  They were hard to find, and fairly expensive and I really would hate to lose them because I didn't provide the right water chemistry, ya know?

Ah...RO isn't even something I'd thought about!  We've actually got an RO system that we used to run to the house, but now it's just collecting dust.  Might be able to put it to good use.  Thanks for the idea!

I absolutely won't do anything quickly or without testing, and you are right, I should probably find some local Dat keepers to see just how picky these guys are.

Oh, and out of the tap, the gH is 300ppm and the kH is 210 ppm. <-- That was using a test strip.  I can get more accurate readings with my test kit if you'd like.

                    Re: Peat Moss question

Using Peat to establish 7.0 - 7.5 PH?  RO is straight 7.0. Mix it with some Houston Tap...thats all you will need.
But then I am inside the loop...don't know water parameters out side loop.

Peat mimics blackwater environs. If your fish like blackwater environs peat is good...if not, I think, you are wasting time and money as well as unnecessarily messing with parameters more than you need.
