  • Sponge Filters

What's the difference between these two? Is there one better? Do I need certain things for each one? I'm not to familiar with sponge filters and I'd like to add one to my 20long shrimp tank.

Bottom one will not fall apart over time and less chance of failing. Holds more bacteria. You want to get reticulated sponge

The main consideration is cubic area. I have the ones you are showing and they work well. But for the same money you can get a larger foam filter. http://www.angelsplus.com/FiltersSponge.htm I have been using these and for the same price or less you get much more cubic area. If you go to Angels Plus, read about ppi also. I agree with Adam about the quality of the foam too.

I'm trying to stick with something small to medium sized, as I have a bunch of plants and drift wood in my tabk. I'm currently just running a AC 30 in the 20long

Another advantage of a foam filter is that the fish or shrimp will eat off of the foam filter. I use them in my fry tank and the fry seem to enjoy picking little tidbits off of the foam filter. If you already have a ac 30 then you already have bio filtration. You can add a small foam filter for a little more bio filtration and the shrimp will enjoy it too. Another good thing about foam filter is if you need to set up another tank real fast you can use the already seasoned foam filter. Either way adding a foam filter to a tank is always a positive thing.

This is the type I keep in my QT/hospital tank. I've had them for years and there is no deterioration of the foam.

Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

Sponge filter take up space in your tank, and you need an air pump to drive it.
