So instead of letting my 10 gallon tank go sitting unused I started a fishless cycle. I used small chunk of shrimp to be the source of ammonia. Took it out after 4 days. My testing is as follows :
Day 1: 9/26 Ammonia 0.25, nitrite 0, nitrate 0
9/27 ammonia 0.25, nitrite 0.5, nitrate 0
9/28 Ammonia 0.5, nitrite 0.5, nitrate 0
9/29 ammonia 1.0, nitrite 0.5, nitrate 20 (removed shrimp)
9/30 Ammonia 0.5, nitrite 3.0, nitrate 40
10/1 ammonia 0.25, nitrite 1.0, nitrate 40
10/2 ammonia 0.0, nitrite 0.5, nitrate 40
And this morning: 10/3 ammonia 0.0, nitrite 0.0, nitrate 80
I am using a sand substrate and I have a few pieces of Java fern just starting out. Should I give it a few more days before adding fish or do you think it's safe to now? I am hoping that the Java fern will help to drop the nitrate levels. How long does that take and how well established do the plants need to be? Right now they are about 5 inches tall and just planted in the substrate. Only 4 plants for now but I was told they will grow and spread. I want to do either guppies or Endlers.
And advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rob
