In my 135 gallon tank, I probably have approximately 100 gallons of water. Before using two heaters, I used one 300-watt Hydor outside heater (did not use the inline although purchased). I set the thermostat at 84F and within 24 hours my aquarium stabilized at this desired temperature. The rule of thumb to use 5 watts per gallon is not always applicable.

At 84F, I can keep discus and greatly reduce the chance of ich (I have no quarantine tank).

I have a 90 gallon tank and I use 2 adjustable heaters as well. Just in case one goes out. I can use the other as a back up. I keep it at 78 degrees.
I'm also worried about ick, but I'm getting another hospital tank.

I use a single 300w eheim heater in my 150g it can take the tank to 90 degrees. I keep it at 82. I never worry about it going out. If it does it's over 20 years old. I will get a new heater. In one of my tanks I have no heater at all. It stays 76 to 78. All the time. That would be just from the lights and pump. Only my discus and altums need the hotter water.
