I have only used internal and undergravel filters so far, but I have a 35 gallon and was going to get a 29 gallon for the bottom of my rack and would like to run both of these on the same external filter rated for something in the 70gal range. Is this possible to split the intake/discharge and do this. Internal filters are becoming an eyesore, there is no room between the wall and the tanks for a HOB, so if this is possible that would be awesome.

Re: External filter on 2 tanks?
2 tanks in parallel will be dificult
But you can add an overflow from the top tank to the botom tank,
run the filter intake from the botom tank and the filter output to the top tank.'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Re: External filter on 2 tanks?
I would use a small wet/dry....You can have both tanks drain into the same wet/dry and then either have two small return pumps or one big one T'd off with ball valves for each tank.
Either drill the tanks or get small overflow boxes for each of them.700g Mini-Monster tank

Re: External filter on 2 tanks?
biggest problem to solve is how to keep the pump from over filling one tank and running dry on the oter
If you run 2 tanks in series you only need one overflow.
If you run the tanks in parallel you need overflows for each tank and valves or some way to divide the return water to the tanks

Re: External filter on 2 tanks?
A big internal overflow would defeat my purpose for using an external filter pump. I don't want to do any drilling on a tank, I am not that confident with my DIY skills. I also went by a tank for the rack and it is too tall, so I am only going to be putting a 20gal rather than the 29 down there.
I don't know how beneficial it would be for these smaller tanks. I think I might just stick with internals for these smaller tanks for now. Thanks for the help all.
