Eheim 2260 inlet protection (sponges?)

I run 2 Eheim 2260's on my 210 gallon. I'd like to set up some sort of prefilter for the inlets. Has anyone ever put sponge filters on top of one of these inlets? Looking for ideas.

I've seen people do it should work just fine just make sure u put it over the strainer

You can purchase the prefilter sponge online or at lfs. They run for about $3-5 each. I have it on some of my inlet. I clean them at every water change.
