My issue may have come from keeping the tank too clean and not letting enough algae grow to keep them fed.  But I had a pair that knocked out close to $100 worth of various African and South American cichlids in the various tanks.  I would check the tank in morning and one by one they would take out the smaller juveniles.  All you would find would be the carcass hidden under a rock or something.  Removed the Plecos and everyone seemed to be ok.

Hi all.  I'm new to Houston Fishbox.

I've been preparing to set up a 75 gal tank probably with South American cichlids and would like to include live plants.  So I have been looking around for lighting.  I came across these lights:  FullSpectrumSolutions

They are not specifically for aquariums, but are rated at 5900K and 94+ CRI. Has anyone out there used something similar ?  What's a good ballpark number for total wattage for a 75gal ?

            Matt

With those lamps you lose a lot of light through restrike and through the design of it.

I would probably rather look into some std. fluorescent shop light vs. those.

Try planting some lowlight plants such as ferns & anubias. Cichlids will up root and pick @ almost any plant in there aquarium
I've had luck w/ ferns, anubias being tied to wood and rock and being left alone by my fish.
