There are significant differences in activated carbon; it has to do with number and size of "pores". I don't know if products for aquariums get that sophisticated; There would be ratings of "square meters/gram" ( 100's). The carbon aDsorbs stuff on the surface, so you want a lot of surface area. But some very large (protein ?) molecules won't fit into very small pores. You can reactivate it by heating ( pretty hot like 600F + so a home oven is not very good.)
