    Re: Black Sand (substrate) Anyone

I'm going to make one more request from the guy who has the account with the folks in Columbus who bag this Black Beauty, and see what he tells me. I believe the delay is due to his account status with this company, they make him buy 3 pallets at a time, and he has to sit on whatever I dont' take.

I'll let you all know by Wednesday or Thursday, I should see him at least once by then.

        Re: Black Sand (substrate) Anyone

has anyone tried the sand quarry off of beltway 8 by hwy 90? that is where i bought my sand before and they sold two bags to me with no problem. dont know if they have black but they did have a few different colors when i was there. i was trying to get the whitest sand back then, which was basically the same color as sand on the beach. any pics of what this black sand looks like in an aquarium? also, how easy is it to clean?

Not that I am aware of....if anyone can find a easier contact for it, I know myself and a few others would be happy to hear about it....

I believe this is the number. (281) 456-9553. it is off of garrett rd, which is off beltway 8 just north of hwy 90. give em a call. if you go there, just make sure you go when it is dry or you will most likely need a truck or suv. the road going into the place is about a mile long and nothing but sand. when i went it was wet and sloshy, and yes i had to put my truck in 4 wheel to do it smoothly. i know i got a hella deal on my regular sand from them. i had to clean it out pretty good, but other than that it was great. here is some pics of my old tank with the sand in it. sorry to clutter up the thread....feel free to delet as needed, just showing an example...    i want to say i paid between $12 and $20 a bag, which is all that is in this aquarium. i just remember i couldnt find the same amount for less than what i paid.

You can get the black sand at any Equipment rental place that rents sandblasters for 7$ per 80lb bag.

If you call Charles at Fish Ranch he can tell you who has it in stock. He was CF's source.

Imaguygeek is incorrect (as  :P  usual) Charles at fish ranch is not the source of the sand I was getting, but I did notice the same BRAND of sand bag sitting in his store, maybe that's where Imaguygeek is coming up with that assumption. If anyone wants the number to the quarrry yard out in Columbus, where I did buy the sand, just pm me and I'll be happy to give it to you.

I was only going on the information provided to me. May have been the white sand but either way. Spot has helped out by letting us know where to get it for $8 a bag. Much better than $20 a bag

Nope - wish one of the bags had been torn - would like to see it close-up. Black Diamond's website shows they have some finer, and some more coarse than that one.  I'm thinking anything used for blasting though, might have sharp edges.  For me, that would be bad, as I keep loaches and/or cories and/or catfish in nearly all my tanks, and it would tear up their barbels/whiskers if they rooted through it very much.  :(

                          Re: Black Sand (substrate) Anyone

I happened across this just now...

Black Beauty is another affordable sand used for sand-blasting and is sold at home supply/hardware outlets. It’s not really sand but powdered iron slag. It can be quite sharp so it’s not recommended for fish that sift a lot of sand such as Tanganyikan sandsifters. Furthermore, these very fine particles contain iron, which means they are not inert.

Did I miss out on the black sand during IKE ?
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

No, I put the black sand purchase on the back burner for now. I'd like to confirm the composition of the sand with the quarry too, to ensure it is actually sand and does not contain any metal.
