problem with a new fluval FX5

I recently bought new canister and when I plugged it in the outlet (after filling th tray media with lava rocks, carbon, and more sponges and filling it up with water), it would run for a minute or so and then the motor would stop/shut off.

does anyone might know what I'm doing wrong or is it the canister itself?

fx5's are designed to shut off every few minutes and then they restart to allow air trapped in filter to escape.

the fluval fx5 when first started up will run about a minute then turn it's self off to purge out trapped air in the canister.   it will then restart after a short time by its self.    
did it not restart?   believe it tells about it in the directions.

It has a motor sensor at the impeller, I guess like an overspeed trip.  It needs to be kept clean, or it may not function correctly.

Basically, it is a sensor so it knows when its sucking air its got to purge.

The earlier models were having problems, then they supposedly fixed it.
