  • TDS calibration

I just bought a TDS-4 Meter by HM Digital from Amazon.com for $21.29
does this meter need some sort of calabration solution ?
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

No... you just test it against a known good source but most of the cheap meters will be off.

      Re: TDS calibration

The analog TDS meters and conductivity meters I used at the dialysis clinic were basically the same device, scaled differently with different shunt resistances. The meter had a cup with a pair of electrodes in the bottom which passed current through the solution being tested. We had a calibration solution for each. You can make a calibration solution with distilled water and baking soda. First, test your solution with a KH test kit, then multiply the result by 16.7. The product of the two numbers is roughly what your TDS meter should read. One thing to remember; TDS meters measure ALL dissolved solids, including those which don't show up on a hardness test, like sodium.

        TA-DAAAAAA
After sitting in the box for 18 month I finally have my RO system installed
My tap water TDS is 350,   The RO out water is 170 and the waste water is 450.
Does that sound like everything is working properly or did I mess somenting up ?

          Re: TDS calibration

That isnt right PP. Your RO should be 0 or very close to 0.
          350 sounds right for tap.
You do have the RO hooked upto cold water right?

yes, cold tap water, taped from a pipe in the attic.
guess I better flush the RO membrane.  and get some bottled water to check the TDS meter.

If it is a new RO system then let it work... dump the first 15-20g of RO water made and then retest.

                Re: TDS calibration

I flushed the system for half an hour while I ate a half dozen crabs..... fresh from the bay    and the TDS retested at 125.

I have it running into a sealed 30 gal drum tonight.
I expect the back pressure to shut it down when the air
pressure in the drum is equal to the tap water pressure.
If not, Ill get to test my new water on the floor alarm.....    found it at Lowe's while I was buying pipe fittings.

I'll retest for TDS tomorow and start lowering the pH.

Bottled water has can have a high TDS.
Get a small bottle of distilled water and see what the TDS is in that.

                    Re: TDS calibration

Well, the good news is that my 30gal drum had 20gal of water in it and was not leaking.
The bad news is that it was inflated like a ballon - both ends were pouched out like a soda can left in the freezer
and even after I opened the valve and let the water rush out my plastic drum is still deformed.
Guess it wasn't ment to be a presurized tank.................

TDS are down to 100 now.  I thought about adjusting the valve on the waste water outlet to lower the backpressure on the membrane
but it appeares to kick in the backwash mode when I open up the valve.

Guess I go shopping for some distilled water.

                      Re: TDS calibration

                      Hey!

Ok so I too have an HM TDS meter, but I got it for about $15 from a mate here in town who sells them (mostly on ebay or aquabid). His eBay ID id affordableinstuments786 but if you can't find what you wnat just pm or emial me.

So my readings in PPM are:

                      Het/Endlers tank - 720
                      150 soft/acidic - 456
out of the faucet - 250
                      out of my R/O - 21

I have only just started using this thing, and I intend to track my TDS as a rough indocator of water quality and my use of additives. Same guy will be doing pH, Nitrate, Nitrite meters althought these will be a little more expensive. If anyone is interested I will get his pricing.

The accuracy of the cheap meters is plenty good enough for freshwater aquarists.

I would be interested in a nitrite/nitrate meter if the price is right.

The latest water test results from the City of LaMarque are TDS of 730 with 250 ppm of that being sodium.

Well its about time for a water change on that one. Also I used one of those 3 day fish feeder blocks when I wnet away and that is big ol block of solids to disolve! Having said that i would expect the TDS to be higher than the 150 because I add hardness back in.
