  • Mag 7 in Sump/ Filter media location

    Mornin'!

I just replaced an old aquaclear 802 powerhead with a mag 7 in my wet dry. Big improvement! It is noticeably louder (hum) than the powerhead was, but I guess this is normal and that I will get used to it. I seem to remember my old Rio was louder as well. I also have an Eheim 2217 canister. This is on a 75 gal freshwater by the way.

Here's my question. I was told that since the mag 7 was pushing alot more water than the Eheim, and since it would be more convenient to change more frequently if it were in the sump, I should put my carbon in the sump instead of the cannister. He also recommended some media for phosphate removal.

Do any of you guys put carbon and or phosphate control in the sump instead of cannisters if you have both, and if so, what is your reasoning. Inquiring mind wants to know.

    Thanks

Both will lose effectiveness fairly quick so I opt not to use it.

I don't see much of an improvement with frequent maintenance of the tank that I'm doing.

+1  - I have no need for them with weekly water changes
but technically, the one with the higest rate of flow will be the most effective.
If I were using, I would chose the easy access of a wet / dry because it makes it a whole lot easier to replace the media.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

did you use the anti vibration pad on the mag? the sound you are hearing is probably the return making a splash noise on the surface. i would rather have the carbon in the sump. it's a pain to take it out of the eheim if you need to medicate the fish. if you put carbon in eheim you have to clean monthly. i like to clean mine every 3 months. do a massive water change or two a week and you won't need the carbon and phosphate media.

If you are referring to the base plate that was attached, I took it off. Is that what you mean? It is more of a hum that gets louder/ soter if I move it around in the sump.
