I have been using this stuff to dechlorinate bleached sponges and replacement water. directions said 4 oz per gal of distilled waterand 1 drop per gal to dechlorinate. so I made a gallon about 3 months ago. just filled up a 5 gal bucket of replacement water, added 6 drops of homemade dechlorinater and tested it for chlorine. this stuff did not work. I had tons of chlorine from the tap water. so I called my chemist friend. He said at that weak concentration the shelf life would be about 2 weeks. so from now on I will make it a lot stronger and only do 2 oz's at a time. if anybody wants a good chlorine test go to hach.com and get the this reagent. DPD Total chlorine Reagent cat. 21982-46. there is a test kit ModelCN-66 also, but you really do not need it. it will tell you exactly how much chlorine you have but I just want to know I don't have any. to use reagent add 5ml test water to a test tube. add reagent, swirl test tube to mix. wait 3 minutes and if any pink you have chlorine. if it's clear you are good to go.

      Re: sodium thiosulfate

I use 1 tbs to a pint of water to make standard strength "zip" drops
use it to rince equipment after soaking in a bleach solution
also to stop the reaction when decapsulating brine shrimp eggs.

don't normally use it to dechlorinate tap water as the city uses chloramines not chlorine.

Thiosulfate will break the bond in Chloramine between the Chlorine and the Ammonia, and it binds Chlorine and most heavy trace metals.
The ammonia which is left behind should be in nominal amounts. However, you should test the ammonia level in your tap water after treating it.
Ammonia test kits may give false readings if there is excessive amounts of Hypo in the tested sample.
A high level of ammonia is toxic, causing Increased mucus layer on fishes mucus membrane, Swollen gills, Fin rot,
Flicking against hard surfaces, Gasping at the surface of the water, Inability of fish to maintain its balance in the water.

Have you verified the reading you have gotten with these chemicals  ?
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

yea I know about the nominal amount of ammonia but I figure my W/D's will handle it with no problem. It's only a bucket or two a week for a few tanks. It's mainly for the sponges that I bleach. All my water change water is run thru carbon so I don't use zipp drps for w/c. In the future I might though because of impatience. I might go ahead and increase my flow through the carbon and use the zipp drops. :)
