    Water Test kits

    Does anyone have a suggestion for what a good quality test kit is?  I have had the basic ones in the past, have oggled the more elaborate ones, but do not know if they are really necessary.

    This is for a planted 55g FW tank.

    Simple API test will get you by.

      API freshwater test kit.   If you need to know the hardness (kh and gh) you need to buy that add on kit also.  (~30 for the full std freshwater kit) and ~10 for kh/gh kit..

        I am guessing that by API you mean aquarium pharm?

          Yes. If you want to get a more accurate test kit I would look into Hanna or a bit cheaper, Elos.

            oh yeah, make sure you check the date your test kit was made. I learned this the hard way until ek pointed it out to me. bought a "brand new" API test kit from petsmart that was 2003.

                yeah that sucks.....

                most of the things we test for last 3 years from date of bottle. Some last 4-5 years depending on what you are testing.
                I ate my fish that died.

                    lol, at least you got your money back.

                    Now petsmart knows their whole stock of freshwater test kit is bad.....bet they are still selling it off to people that don't know.

                      I seriously doubt the people at those big chains know what they are doing except for a small select few.


                      Now the specialized LFS is another story.... :(
