Re: Should I add an air stone to one side

We call the tanks in the house "kitty cat tv", we have 5 cats and all of them love the tanks. Either as an entertainment source, a place for some fresh water, or as a handy place to take a nap. It is actually quite annoying when it comes time to feed the fish and you have to chase a cat off the hood in order to get it open.
Consider my posts as general information based on personal experiences, and in most cases, far oversimplified. Actual mileage may vary. Don't try this at home. If symptoms persist, contact your physician.

What is it about fish people - do we all have cats? Isn't that asking for trouble? Maybe we just like to live on the edge!

My older cats aren't interested but Mister is fascinated. "Kitty cat tv" is a perfect description!

OK, let's get back on topic here.

Re: Should I add an air stone to one side

Well it is on topic. Daisy, if you allow your cat a spot on the right side of the aquarium, the fish won't go over there and the spot won't accumulate gunk. Better yet, have the cat pop up and scare them throughout the day and they'll keep the bottom stirred up for you. (See, we're on topic). My post above is just a demonstration. And Phreek's is showing how to get the fish to go down further into the tank to insure the bottom gets stirred up really well. I think for optimal performance, you should have a top-popper and a bottom-popper at intervals throughout the day.

Really though, I saw a truck air ornament the other day. The bubbles opened the hood so you could see the engine. I thought that was cute and a little unusual. I saw if you do add one, add an ornament that you really like. Look on eBay, there's gotta be something besides the regular treasure chest to make your tank unique.

...unless a treasure chest is what you're in the market for. Even then there's quite a variety!

Re: Should I add an air stone to one side

Anytime I wanted to add circulation or air I took a bubble wand or something similar, even just a regular airstone and partially buried it under the gravel, preferably behind or a little around a nice piece of wood or other decoration.  Kind of like a bubble curtain.  You can buy the clips to hold the airline to the glass and make it less obvious, or hide it behind plants, etc.

Re: Should I add an air stone to one side

Yeah . . . I really don't want a treasure chest or a skull, skeleton type thing, although those must be popular with someone - there are so many of them.  :?

The whole reason I even came up with this it that my litlle 2.5g mini bow always seemed to have a sllimy film on the top. So I called Tetra and asked about it. The guy there said it was probably from debris, but I kept that little tank really clean. I told him that the whisper filter just didn't produce enough movement, and I can't go up a size because of the depth of the tank.

He suggested that I just put an airstone in the gravel to get the water stirred up more - just like you did szid. So I can find these clips at any LFS? In the little tank that makes more sense, but in the big one I will get an ornament. Unless I can train the cat to consistently smack the tank to keep things stirred up!

Sure, they've been in most all I've been in.  I really like putting it behind a rock or nice piece of wood.  As far as the bubbles go, there's a variety available.  They have some round air bubble makers that produce really fine bubbble, just about any kind of bubble you want is available.
