You do not want a direct drive pump as it produces too much heat.
You want a magnetic coupled drive, submersable pump witrh a flow rate of 3X tank size at 5' head or better.
Most pumps advertise flow rate at 0' head so look for something thats claims 700 gph or better.
Danner mag 7 or equil. Danner Flow rates
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

You should go online (or sometimes on the box) and look at at flow vs head curves for the pumps you are considering.

Pick a pump that is sized correctly to give the required flow (gpm) for the amount of head (ft) that the water is to be raised.
If you can't get one that is exactly sized, i would suggest getting one size larger, then just put a ball valve in-line with the return line and you can control the flow by closing the valve.

I'm not too familiar with harbor freight, but i know that standard beckett pond pumps from home depot work than the ones made specially for aquaria.

Here are some curves for the danner mag - drives.
there should be similar curves for pretty much any good pumps on the market.

i was told to go to home depot, i was definatly planning on buying a  magnetic drive pump.
but didnt want to pay $180+ for the mag 9 i wanted  :(

so a pond pump will work?
          off to home depot

Yes... Home Depot...try Beckett pumps. They are sold as pond pumps.
I use the submersible ones for my reef tank.

i bought one for my wet dry. but i had not considered about the flow rate between out and in to the wet dry. so, sometimes the water in wet dry is too low, and the pump stops working, sometimes the water is too high and i get my floor all wet. i have a ball-valve in line from the tank ->wet dry, and it's difficult to balance the flow rate , and make the water level in the wet dry constant.

The water level in the wet and dry should be constant except for the evaporation.
If I read you correctly, you control the drain/ the flow from the tank to the wet& dry with a ball valve?
You should not do that. If you want to control anything, control the return flow from the pump in your wet & dry back to the tank. You will be pumping x gallons of water back into your tank and if you have a big enough drain line, all x gallons will drain back into your wet & dry, thus keeping your water level constant.
