  • Sponge Filters

I think I want to start using sponge filters in my tanks (55g, 20L & 10g) but I'm ignorant on what would be best and exactly how do they work?

And, before anyone jumps my fins for not doing a 'search', I did but came up empty handed...maybe I was doing something wrong, I don't know.

I like Azoo sponge filters in my bare spawn & growout tanks.
I don't like the look in my planted tanks.

    http://www.aquaticeco.com/search/0/sponge%20filter

The air bubbles push clean water out the stack which in turn draws dirty water & bio-waste into the foam.

The foam itself acts as a mechanical filter trapping suspended particals. The pores in the foam provide a very large amount of surface area for the nitrifying bacteria.

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

So is the filter hooked up to an airline or attached to the end of my existing, over the back canister filter?

Seems they also come in various sizes. Which would be best for each one of my tanks? Do you take them out, rinse and put back or replace?

Since we are talking about sponge filters. I have a question. If I didn't want to use air, could you just push water through it and if so, would that work, or it would have to be air. I am thinking about water from the pump that the flow can be controlled.

Also, what do you guys usually use as a diy sponge. The one for car washes or do you get it from somewhere's else

              Thanks

They can be hooked up to a power head, I have also attached them to the intake tube of my hob filters in fry tanks.

I like to use the Azoo # 13011 - small enouth to fit in a beanny box

But I use them in bare 10g breeding tanks with 4" water level for my bettas
I also use the 4" cube DIY filters in my 15/20 grow out tanks

                      I'm partial to these:

Show quality angelfish, IFGA guppies, bristlenose and fancy swordtails available here. We also carry a line of fish supplies that breeders find valuable.

Can they be used in a tank that's decorated? And if you have to run an airline to them, do you still need additional aeration? Help me out here, guys......I've never used one but see them used in almost all the shops I go into.

YOu can, but they are unsightly in my opinion because they interfere with decoration.

I am sorry that I have not read every post, but why not get a filter for your aquarium that hangs on the back, this way to get all you can for decoration?

If you use a sponge filter that is properly cleaned and maintained and sized for your tank size, all you'll need is the airline that runs it.

If your tank is overloaded with fish, then it might be a problem.

It depends on type sponge filter you get. Some of them can and some can't.

Depending on the fish you have in the tank, you may need more air.

I make sponge filters so I can sell some to you if you'd like.
