some sponge filters are made with a weight so they stay on the bottom of a bare tank.
Others are made without weight but have a suction cup to stick on the back or end wall. These work best with planted tanks.
It is good to stir up the water in a tank so that the water with low O2 and high CO2 (usually on the bottom) gets to the surface and can exchange gasses with the outside air. You can do this with numerous pieces of equipment, water pumps, canister filters, HOB filters or even air stones. The more fish you have in the tank, the more O2 will be used and the more CO2 will be given off and the more you want to stir up the water.
A single air operated sponge filter should be sufficient for a reasonably stocked tank. If you have too many fish, you need to add more air stones like they do in the LFS.
