  • Fbfak - FishBox FirstAid Kit

The biggest problem people have when they have a sick fish is that they are not prepared. They think “If my fish gets sick, I’ll go to the LFS and buy the meds I need”
But in a pressure situation, every HOUR counts. The problem is....

    a) You don’t know which meds to use.
    b) By the time you figure out there is a problem, it may be too late to fix it.
    c) Your LFS is closed for the night or holiday
    d) Your LFS doesn’t have the best meds in stock.

What we should all have is a FishBox FirstAid Kit for our fish. The sooner we treat the problem, the better chance your fish has for survival. If you had a FishBox FirstAid Kit what meds would you want in it for……..

    bacterial infections

    fungal infections

    External Parasites

    Internal Parasites

    Water Quality problems

Please post your recomendations for a FBFAK
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I like the idea of a FBFAK.
Fish are people too, they just have gills.

        Bacterial infections
        - Erythromycin
        - Tetracycline
        - Pimafix

        Fungal infections
        - Melafix
**Note: Many fungal infections will have an underlying bacterial infection, so I always treat for both in this case.

        External Parasites
        - Ick Attack
        - Jungle Labs Parasite Clear

        Internal Parasites
        - Jungle Labs Parasite Clear
        - Clout
        - Epson Salt

        Water Quality problems
        - No meds, just water change and aquarium salt

Medications -- If you need to use Metro, Jungle labs "Head in the hole" is 100% Metro, so you can get that when you need to treat with Metro -- one bottle only handles 265 gallon so make sure that you QT fish in a small tank or your Metro will run out quick

I really like this idea! I've always freaked out and driven to PetSmart for meds unless I just happened to have something with me.

I always wash up to my elbows in smelly soap and rinse until I can't smell it anymore. And I do it often. I've got a bit of germophobia. How do you sterilize fish nets and filters? I think I saw someone once with a fish net bucket that had a chemical in it to disinfect them but I don't know what they used. I've just rinsed them hot water.

Could you maybe change the title to "FBfak- FishBox first-aid kit" so it's more clear?

I tried keeping my nets in a dilute bleach solution to steralize them but all I had left was the frame.

Wait so the bleach dissolved the netting? I think the person I'm remembering used a colored solution. It was blue or green, I think. And how do you sterilize your filters? Are you talking about after you've quarantined a fish and need to clean out the hospital tank? Running bleach water through it should do the trick, right?

You are probably thinking of Net Soak made by Jungle Labs. It works well.

Oh okay! Thanks! I just have a few questions about it. Do you leave the nets in it all the time? Would you have to wash the stuff off before using the net?
