+1 on what Geoff said.. Cut your feedings to once or twice a day.
You need to let the tank cycle though.. more water changes.. young fish cannot handle stress like an adult can. They will die on you quick if they are stressed.

totally agree on the strips being just a "ballpark". most peopel get intimidated by their first test kits, so the strips was moreover to just break em in. let them know there is more than likely an imbalance. In addition, after giving it more thought, you can try CAREEFULLY gravel vac'ing the tank. that will help with your levels spiking too. I'd be doing at least a 10% change every other day with as much as you feed/how many little ones. if they are still droppin on ya, move to 25%. from my experience, babies have a 0 tolerance for nitrite. and just about as low a tolerance for ammonia140 New World Cichlids

And to think....in January it was just the 29...)

ok...so I don believe its an uncycled tank. I have had 15 LARGE Discus and about 50 tetras in this tank for over 2 months. I literally pulled the Discus out one day and the next day I did a 60% WC and added the tropheus later in the evening. There was no time for bacteria to die. I am starting to think it was just stragglers in the bunch. Since the original post, all the trophs recognize feeding time now. they all school up and swim back and forth very excited and are eating the dianichi on the first bite now. Also, They did not come from Old World...I know that for a fact. I did a 50% WC today and everybody is swimming happy. Thx for your opinions on the problem, as for the number of feedings...I only fed this much because I was instructed to do so by an experienced fellow 'boxer.250gallon-Wild Angels, community

I haven't seen you post this.. but are you treating your water with dechlorinator when you are doing WC?
I'm sure you are, but just making sure...300g - Petrochromis Texas "Red Fin" Longola, Petrochromis Red Bulu, Tropheus Red Rainbow Kansanga.

no more deaths... They are actually settling in nicely. I have few dominating certain caves, and now they recognize when I am about to feed. They all come up to the front glass and swim back and forth in the current.250gallon-Wild Angels, community
